A strong family spirit fosters a harmonious and prosperous society

23 November 2024

PUTATAN: The government is actively promoting a spirit of family unity through the initiative known as Kasih MADANI and the designation of November as National Family Month. This initiative aims to foster a stable, harmonious, and prosperous society.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor announced that during the Federal Cabinet Meeting on November 3, 2023, a proposal from the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development was approved to extend the celebration of National Family Month to all ministries and state governments starting this year.

He emphasised the expectation for all ministries and stakeholders to engage in this initiative, stating, "The implementation of family day activities in every ministry and government agency should be made a mandatory annual event every November."

Furthermore, he encouraged the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local communities to actively participate in family welfare programs.

These remarks were made at the Launching Ceremony for November National Family Month at the state level for Sabah 2024, as well as the Family and Child Safety Education (PEKA) initiative by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN). The speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister III/State Minister of Works, Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya.

Hajiji highlighted the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements, including the use of gadgets and social media, which can expose children and teenagers to various influences that may hinder their development.

He referenced a UNICEF study indicating that over 70% of children in Malaysia are using the internet from a young age, underscoring the need for parents to be vigilant in managing their children's access to technology. "Therefore, the state government will collaborate with agencies and NGOs to introduce digital literacy programs for families," he stated.

He further noted that family safety awareness must begin with consistent education and training, emphasising the importance of teaching children safety values across physical, emotional, and cyber domains.

Citing statistics from Cybersecurity Malaysia, he pointed out a 15% increase in cybercrime cases involving teenagers in 2023, which highlights the necessity for proactive measures from parents and educators to safeguard the younger generation.

"I am confident that the efforts made through this celebration and various programs like PEKA@LPPKN can significantly enhance the welfare of family institutions in Sabah," he remarked.

Hajiji reaffirmed the state government's commitment to empowering women through development and training programs focused on gender equality, recognising the vital roles women play as mothers, wives, and community members.

He also stressed the importance of addressing mental health in maintaining family welfare, as it has profound implications for the emotional and social stability of families.
