KOTA KINABALU: Bank Rakyat's generous donation of RM10,000 to the Kota Kinabalu Children's Home holds great significance for the establishment, stated Datuk Adzmi KK Juatan, the Chairman of the home’s Visitors Board.
“We, the members of the Visitors board at the Kota Kinabalu Children's Home, along with the children, are deeply touched and delighted by the contribution from Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives,” he said adding that the contribution by Bank Rakyat an agency under the Ministry exemplifies a thoughtful commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of these children, going beyond mere financial support.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude, and we sincerely hope that this gesture brings joy and a brighter future to the children.”
"Regarding the home, he noted that it was established in 2004 to provide a safe haven for orphans and children whose parents are facing various difficulties. Currently, the home accommodates 54 children, both boys and girls, ranging in age from infants to 17 years old."
“The care provided here is comprehensive, ensuring that the children receive adequate attention and support. After reaching the age of 17 or completing their fifth form, residents are encouraged to pursue further education up to the university level,” he said adding that after they leave, they are no longer under the direct care of the home at that stage, but they continue to be monitored and supported.
Notably, some former residents who have entered the workforce still return to the home as visitors, offering their assistance and support to current residents.
Currently, a dedicated team of 60 staff members, including administrative personnel, is responsible for the welfare of the children. Many of these caregivers possess the necessary skills to look after the youngsters, providing them with the nurturing environment they need as they transition to adulthood.
Adzmi shared that children are admitted to the home following identification and assessment by the Department of Social Welfare in their respective districts, which involves confirming that they are facing challenges at home. Following this evaluation, they are placed in the home, subject to court approval.
The facility can accommodate up to 100 children, although the current number is 54, showing some fluctuation over time. The Kota Kinabalu Children's Home operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development.
Be that as it may, the home welcomes contributions from corporate members and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
“We are open to anyone who wishes to donate, whether they are corporates or individuals. Typically, potential donors will contact us beforehand to arrange an appointment with the principal. Once approval is granted, we will proceed with their contribution, which may involve direct donations or the organisation of various programmes to benefit the children.”
Another home, As-Sakinah Orphanage Papar was also accorded RM6,000 to purchase necessities to ensure that the children can enjoy the atmosphere of Ramadan and Syawal with full joy.
Earlier during the event, the Minister said his Ministry always welcomes the implementation of corporate social responsibility initiatives by the private and corporate sectors, especially those targeting groups in need, including children as beneficiaries.
He said they consistently support various activities and programmes aimed at enhancing the well-being of children in the country, particularly those who are less fortunate, as it helps strengthen family values and concern within society regardless of background.
