Its chairperson Emily Jeneble shares that the one of the primary goals of Koperasi Kraf Batu Lunguyan is to preserve and promote traditional crafts that reflect the cultural heritage of the region.

By providing training and resources, the cooperative helps artisans refine their skills and maintain the quality of their products.

“As in the days of old, we scour nature to get our handicraft materials as we live in close harmony with our  natural environments, which allowed us to source and utilise materials such as reeds and bamboo with great effectiveness. This profound connection to our surroundings not only facilitated practical craftsmanship but also contributed significantly to our cultural identity,” she shares when met at the Jom@Coop, a programme organised by Institute Koperasi Malaysia (IKM), recently.

“Koperasi Kraf Batu Lunguyan Sook Berhad, located in Kg Batu Lunguyan, is committed to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of bamboo weaving by creating contemporary products inspired by traditional artistry.”

“Our collection, which began with items such as the sirung or woven headgear and takinan or bamboo trays, has since expanded to include an array of stylish bags, wallets, and accessories. Each piece artfully blends bamboo with complementary materials like canvas and PU leather, transforming them into more than mere products; they embody significant narratives from our Dusun and Murut heritage, adorned with motifs that resonate deeply with cultural meaning,” she shared.

According to her, their artisans are dedicated to maintaining quality craftsmanship, producing items that both celebrate and sustain the traditions of the community. This commitment has garnered them both local and international recognition, with their products being showcased at prestigious events, government offices, and even within the fashion industry.

“Moreover, we are passionate about imparting our skills and knowledge to the next generation. Through workshops and training sessions, we aim to inspire young artisans and share the beauty and potential of our craft on a global scale. We believe that by nurturing this talent, we not only preserve our cultural legacy but also ensure its continued evolution in a modern context. As we move forward, we remain excited and hopeful about the possibilities that lie ahead, eager to share our story and craftsmanship with the world,” she enthused.

“The weaving materials utilised by our community are carefully sourced from the natural surroundings of our village, ensuring that we maintain a sustainable connection to our environment. This approach not only reinforces our commitment to preserving local resources but also allows us to create products that are steeped in authenticity and tradition.”

“Every item in our collection is crafted entirely by villagers, including myself, fostering a strong sense of community and pride in our work. This hands-on involvement ensures that each piece reflects the unique craftsmanship and artistic expression of our culture, while also strengthening the ties within our local community.”

“When we experience an influx of orders, we actively collaborate with neighbouring communities in Tenom and Kudat, as well as with those from Pulau Bangi. This cooperative approach enables us to meet demand efficiently and supports a broader network of artisans. The collaboration has proven to have a significant positive impact on the economic development of our community, particularly in rural areas, where employment opportunities can be limited.”

“By working together, we not only enhance our production capacity but also uplift the entire region, providing vital income to families and fostering a shared sense of purpose. Through these collective efforts, we are helping to cultivate a resilient and vibrant local economy that cherishes and promotes our cultural heritage.”

Presently there are 55 members in the cooperative and it has been functioning since 2018, she said, adding that they are still open to new members.

The cooperative aims to improve the economic status of its members by offering opportunities for income generation through the sale of their crafts. This is particularly important in rural areas where job opportunities may be limited.

It also plays a vital role in supporting local artisans, promoting cultural heritage, and driving economic development within the community. Through collaboration and mutual support, the cooperative embodies the spirit of collective effort and sustainability, ensuring that traditional crafts continue to thrive in the modern economy.
