KUDAT: The Kudat district boasts significant growth potential, particularly in the Blue Economy sector, thanks to its strategic location and proximity to countries like China, South Korea, and Japan.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has stated that the Blue Economy initiative, launched last year, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the state’s economic diversification.

“Kudat, with its prime facilities, including deep-sea access and a port, is ideally positioned for such development. Additionally, the proposed Kudat Industrial Park, which will focus on seafood-related industries and trade logistics, is poised to drive economic progress and create employment opportunities,” he remarked.

“A new ferry service to Palawan is also expected to enhance trade, stimulate tourism, and support local SMEs, further diversifying the economy,” he added during the grand opening of the Hakka Historical Gallery Exhibition Centre and Ship-Chapel Landmark, held in Lausan today.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir delivered the Chief Minister’s address.

Hajiji praised the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia (BCCM) for their efforts in completing both the Ship-Chapel Landmark and the Hakka Historical Gallery Exhibition Centre. These institutions celebrate the cultural heritage of the Chinese Hakka community in Sabah, whose ancestors first arrived in Kudat in 1883, over a century ago.

“Indeed, these two significant landmarks represent not only architectural and cultural achievements but also embody our heritage, community spirit, and unity.

“We are grateful that this site, established as a community complex of heritage treasures, will serve to educate future generations about their roots and identity,” he remarked.

He further noted that the development of the area into a distinctive tourist destination is a visionary undertaking.

“Its cultural and historical appeal will attract visitors from near and far. This influx of tourists will not only increase Kudat’s visibility but also generate economic benefits for the local community—creating jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing livelihoods,” he continued.

Hajiji assured that the State Government would provide ongoing support for such initiatives. “The state government is committed to practising fairness and equality in assisting the populace, irrespective of race or religion.

This year, the Sabah government has allocated RM70 million for non-Muslim religious organisations, mission schools, and private schools to ensure their needs are met.

“This marks an increase of RM13.25 million compared to the 2024 allocation of RM56.75 million. We will continue to provide assistance to foster unity, racial harmony, and enduring religious tolerance,” he concluded.
