KOTA BELUD: Tourism has long been recognized as a vital income-generating venture, and the sector of nature tourism, in particular, is gaining significant traction around the globe.

This form of tourism, which focuses on experiencing the natural environment through activities like visiting waterfalls, hiking, and camping, not only provides economic benefits but also plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature among communities and visitors alike.

One of the participants of this tourism is Zinin Daruan who serves as the chairman of Eco Camp Bayayat Kadamaian, a vibrant outdoor destination established in 2015. Originally focusing solely on rafting activities, the camp has since evolved in response to visitor feedback, recognising a growing demand for camping facilities.

As a result, additional space has been designated for camping, welcoming an increasing number of students from private colleges and universities who seek adventure and connection with nature.

“In addition to student groups, we also welcome various organisations, including government agencies, for team-building activities and camping excursions. This diverse clientele reflects the camp’s commitment to providing unique outdoor experiences for a wide range of visitors,” he said.

Currently, Eco Camp Bayayat is equipped with a variety of facilities catering to adventurous guests, including rafting, a zipline, abseiling, hiking, and numerous other outdoor activities, he shared.

Located approximately 20 kilometers from Kota Belud, the camp spans a total area of 9 acres, with 3 acres currently open to the public. While the camp does not yet offer homestays, accommodations primarily focus on camping, which remains in high demand.

“However, plans are underway to establish homestays and chalets in the future. Currently, we feature a hall and a covered hammock area, accommodating up to 20 visitors.”

According to him, “safety is our utmost priority at Eco Camp Bayayat. Activities are meticulously monitored, and we have established comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the well-being of all guests. We expect all visitors to adhere to these guidelines, fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.”

Zinin Daruan

“The majority of our visitors are domestic travelers from Malaysia, although we also welcome tourists from the UK, China, and other locations. Weekend camping is especially popular among local residents, highlighting the camp’s role as a community hub for outdoor enthusiasts.”

“Our rafting route is from Simpang Melangkap, a distance of nine kilometres. The feasibility of rafting activities is contingent on river levels; if the water is excessively high due to flooding, we prioritise safety and will not proceed with rafting. Typically, we operate at levels ranging from Stage 2 to Stage 4, which are manageable in conditions of low flooding.”

For those interested in hiking, Eco Camp Bayayat offers guided experiences led by knowledgeable local guides from the Bayayat community. The hiking trail encompasses approximately 4 kilometers for a complete loop on Singkug Hill, providing guests with breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu. Along the way, hikers can also enjoy the beauty of Guabon Fall, a stunning waterfall that enhances the natural allure of the area.

Camp Bayayat is family-run and a member of the Nabalu Tourism Association. Zinin said they are looking forward to establishing a family cooperative in future.
