PENAMPANG: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor has directed all local authorities across the state to remain vigilant during the rainy season.

"Ensure that all drains are cleared promptly. We cannot afford to wait for the rain to start before taking action. Our goal is to mitigate the impact of floods and be prepared at all times," he stated following his visit to flood victims at the temporary shelter in the Penampang Cultural Centre.

The Chief Minister emphasized that both the State and Federal governments are deeply concerned about those affected by flash floods and are committed to providing assistance to all victims.

"The State government empathizes with the affected families and is ready to offer emergency cash aid of RM1,000 to each family at the Penampang Cultural Centre. Additionally, the Federal government, through the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives of Malaysia, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also the Penampang MP, will extend support," he added.

Furthermore, the State government is considering aid for those whose homes have been severely damaged by the floods but have not been evacuated to the temporary shelter.

District Officer Francis Chong briefed the Chief Minister that currently, 67 families comprising 165 individuals are seeking refuge at the temporary shelter, which was activated on Sunday at 5.25 pm.

He also informed the Chief Minister that 11 villages in the Penampang district were submerged due to the heavy rainfall on Sunday.

Tragically, one life was lost when a woman was swept away by strong currents near the Donggongon roundabout during the flash flood.

Subsequently, Hajiji, accompanied by Ewon, State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Safar Untong, Assistant Works Minister Datuk Limus Jury, and Internal Affairs and Research Secretary Datuk Awang Shaminan Sahari, conducted an assessment of the flood situation in Kampung Tuavon and Hungab.
