KOTA KINABALU: In Sabah, where diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds thrive, traditions are cherished and celebrated. One such tradition is Yee Sang, also known as Yusheng or Prosperity Toss. This festive raw fish salad is a beloved dish during Chinese New Year, particularly among the Chinese community in Sabah and throughout Malaysia.

Yee Sang is a colourful medley that typically includes an assortment of fresh raw fish, shredded vegetables, and a selection of sauces.

The lively act of tossing the ingredients together is not just a preparation ritual; it symbolises the sharing of good fortune, prosperity, and well wishes for the year ahead. This communal act of dining fosters a sense of togetherness and connection, bringing families and friends closer during the festive season.

Yee Sang

One of the premier destinations in Kota Kinabalu to experience the authentic flavours of Yee Sang and sumptuous food is The Crab House, just nearby Jesselton Point.

This restaurant stands out for its exceptional offerings, featuring an impressive array of seafood, including crabs, prawns, clams, fish and other delicacies, making it an ideal location for a festive feast.

Chinese New Year celebrations are synonymous with family gatherings and reunions, and The Crab House alleviates the stress of meal preparation, allowing diners to enjoy a sumptuous spread without the hassle of cooking.

A scrumptious dish

With its festive ambiance and delicious offerings, it promises to enhance the spirit of the season, making it a place where cherished traditions come alive and create lasting memories.

The restaurant has played host to various events including The Miss World gathering, celebrities from Malaysia and international communities as well as many other happenings.

They usually gather at the ground floor hall that accommodates 100 people, shared proprietor Ken Oh.

The Menu

There are 11 private rooms in this restaurant, and collectively can accommodate 300 people at any one time. This is quite a crowd for a restaurant, but it is quite spacious so no one is jostling elbows here. The biggest room can accommodate up to 100 people at any one time with lots of elbow rooms and a good space for those who wish to stand up once in a while to stretch their legs and tummy after a dish.

Ken said during this Chinese New Year there will be three set menus to choose from for those who come to dine in a group. The first menu is comprised of Prosperity Salmon Yu Sheng, Braised Fish Maw and Crab Meat Seafood Soup, Deep Fried Seasonal Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce, Golden Crispy Chicken and Superior Soy Sauce Prawn. There will also be Seasonal Vegetables with Mushroom and Dried Bean curd and The Crab House Signature Fried Rice, Dessert of the Day and Chinese Tea.

“For Menu B, we offer Prosperity Salmon Yu Sheng, Braised Fish Maw and Crab Meat Seafood Soup Steamed Seasonal Fish in Soy Sauce, Golden Crispy Chicken, Superior Soy Sauce Prawn, Salted Egg Yolk Crab, Seasonal Vegetables with Mushroom and Dried Beancurd and the Crab House Signature Fried Rice.”

Meanwhile, the third menu will include The Crab House Prosperity Sliced Abalone and Salmon Yu Sheng, Braised Dried Scallop and Premium Seafood Soup Steamed Seasonal Fish in H.K Style Soy Sauce and Lobster in Cheese and Wet Butter.

It also include Spicy Crab, Abalone with Corn-Fed Chicken, Broccoli with Mushroom and Dried Beancurd, Superior Fragrant Fried Rice, Dessert of the Day and Chinese Tea.
