PENAMPANG: Christmas gatherings can become powerful platforms for enhancing solidarity. By embracing the spirit of togetherness and mutual support, participants can leave with a strengthened sense of community and connection that extends beyond the holiday season.

Datuk Gilbert Sham the Papar United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) division chief said this during the UPKO Limbahau Christmas Open House and New Year gathering today.

According to him, this was an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate the occasion, emphasizing unity beyond religious and racial backgrounds, as well as differing political beliefs. He believed that such gatherings fostered mutual respect and understanding, allowing individuals from diverse walks of life to share in the joy of the event while strengthening community ties.

Gilbert, a member of the TEKUN Board of Directors, also highlighted that many individuals have received assistance from TEKUN Nasional.

“We are deeply grateful to the UPKO President, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who also serves as the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative (MEDC), for appointing three of us, including me as a member of TEKUN board of directors —an agency under his Ministry. This appointment facilitates our efforts to secure financial assistance for Sabah, which we distribute through TEKUN Nasional office across the region.”

“I would also like to acknowledge the Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) which has provided support to over 1,500 students in Limbahau Primary Schools. This foundation operates under the agency led by Datuk Ewon’s Ministry and is committed to helping students achieve their educational goals.”

“In the beginning of this year, we will be applying once again for student assistance. The Chairman of the Bank Rakyat Foundation, Datuk Phillip Lasimbang, has assured us that support will be granted for 545 students from SK St Mary, SK Sacred Heart, and SK Sabandil,” he stressed.

“It is our duty to assist children in need, and I am proud to share that the UPKO President has also extended support to 18 churches and chapels in the Limbahau area. Together, we are working towards building a brighter future for our community.”

He later participated in the cake cutting ceremony that symbolises the Christmas spirit for the day.
