Dingin Batu Campsite: A Scenic Escape with Stunning Mount Kinabalu View

KOTA BELUD: Situated at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, Dingin Batu Campsite (DBCS) offers an unrivaled camping experience that blends breathtaking views, cool mountain air, and serene natural surroundings.
As the first established campsite in Kiau Taburi, it was founded by Florence Duaneh, 52, and her family on ancestral land inherited from her parents.
In 2017, her family began developing the site with the original intention of building a residence. However, inspired by the awe-inspiring view of Mount Kinabalu and the peaceful atmosphere, the idea of creating a campsite was born.

DBCS officially began operations in early 2019 but was forced to pause due to the Movement Control Order (MCO). Following the reopening of borders post-pandemic, the campsite resumed normal operations and has since continued to welcome visitors.
One of the most distinctive features of DBCS is its unparalleled view of Mount Kinabalu, which stands majestically in full display, with visitors frequently marvelling at how clearly every ridge and vein of the mountain can be seen.
In addition to the spectacular scenery, the campsite’s location at the mountain’s foothills ensures a consistently cool and refreshing climate, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and camping enthusiasts.

Like many entrepreneurs, Florence faced significant hurdles in establishing DBCS, including financial constraints and limited access to water resources.
“We had to rely solely on natural spring water and fund the water catchment system ourselves,” she explained.
Another major challenge was the unpaved road leading to the site. “Before DBCS, this route was rarely maintained because it wasn’t a main road for the locals,” Florence noted.

However, she and her family remained steadfast in their efforts to improve the site.
Today, DBCS boasts 13 spacious camping lots, each measuring 24 feet by 18 feet and equipped with power outlets and sinks.
In addition to campsites, the facility offers a homestay featuring three bedrooms, a kitchen, and an open-air hut with cooking facilities.
Other amenities include a mini surau for Muslim visitors and rental services for camping equipment such as tents and flysheets.
DBCS has welcomed a diverse range of visitors, including solo travellers, groups, families, and students from institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Politeknik College conducting outdoor activities.
Beyond local tourists, the campsite has also hosted international visitors from Brunei, the United States, France, and Japan, further establishing its reputation as a must-visit eco-tourism destination.
Despite its growth, challenges persist, particularly in financial sustainability and infrastructure development. Florence hopes for financial support to aid eco-tourism entrepreneurs in advancing the industry.
“Funding is a major challenge. We need support to develop better facilities and enhance visitor experience,” she emphasised.
Looking ahead, Florence plans to expand the campsite by adding five more accommodation units to meet rising demand.
Additionally, DBCS is in the process of constructing a mini café, an office, and a 20 feet by 70 feet open hall. However, financial limitations have slowed progress.
“We have big plans, but everything takes time and resources,” she said.
With a vision to position DBCS as a globally competitive eco-tourism destination, Florence is committed to fostering sustainable tourism while creating employment opportunities for the local community and contributing to Sabah’s tourism growth.
For those seeking a peaceful retreat, Dingin Batu Campsite offers stunning views of Mount Kinabalu, a cool mountain breeze, and a perfect spot to unwind in nature.
