SANDAKAN: Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) President Walter Kenson has stated that the council is gradually witnessing positive outcomes from its efforts to stimulate the local economy, promote a cleaner environment, enhance basic infrastructure, and advance urban planning.

He emphasised that meaningful improvements in public cleanliness and service efficiency can only be achieved through close cooperation between the government and the community, with mutual understanding and shared priorities.

These remarks were made during a meeting yesterday with prominent businessman Dato John Khoo, where they exchanged views on current issues concerning public welfare and infrastructure development in Sandakan.

Walter noted that the council has recently been reviewing and streamlining cumbersome administrative procedures, such as simplifying the process for applying for trading licences, reducing processing times, and improving overall efficiency.

“The municipal council is committed to action, not just idle words,” he affirmed.

He also revealed that the council is currently exploring the possibility of waiving application fees and size restrictions for LED signage.

Additionally, there are plans to establish a dedicated market management committee to expedite the resolution of operational and infrastructural issues in local markets, thereby enhancing supervision and service delivery for both vendors and shoppers.

Conversely, John expressed concerns regarding the hygiene standards of public markets, toilets, and eateries, noting that these facilities influence visitors’ and residents’ first impressions of Sandakan.

“Many eateries barely meet hygiene standards, and some are in a very poor state,” he remarked, calling on the council to enforce stricter regulations and oversight.

“Protecting public health and improving the city’s image must go hand in hand.”

On the matter of the council’s initiative to encourage building owners from the city centre to Taman Nam Tung to repaint their premises, both parties agreed that urban beautification should not rely solely on government efforts. Local businesses also have a vital role to play in contributing to the community.

John suggested that large corporations should fulfil their corporate social responsibility by participating in building repainting and town beautification initiatives.

Walter responded positively, pledging that the council will continue to review its existing policies and promote more progressive models of urban governance.

He further added that the council welcomes participation from individuals and organisations in public affairs. “Only through collective effort can policy reforms be effectively and swiftly implemented,” he stated.

John reaffirmed his commitment to acting as a bridge between the people and the government, emphasising that he will not only faithfully relay grassroots voices but also actively engage in public discourse to help develop practical and well-considered policies.
