KOTA KINABALU: Various initiatives have been undertaken by the Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) for the development of the state and the welfare of the people of Sabah, particularly in the energy sector.

Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, stated that these include the launch of the latest version of the ECoS-SIRIM Safety Label. He described this initiative as a proactive step by ECoS to protect consumers’ interests, including ensuring that only safe and high-quality electrical and gas equipment are marketed within the state.

According to him, the launch of this label also leads to important programmes related to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ECoS and the Sarawak Government through the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications (MUT) Sarawak.

He emphasised that this strategic collaboration is vital and demonstrates mutual recognition of electrical and gas safety standards, highlighting ECoS’s role in ensuring that products used by the public meet the highest standards.

“This also represents another area of cooperation for mutual benefit, stemming from the close ties that already exist between Sabah and Sarawak through their respective regulatory authorities.

“I am confident that with the signing of this MoU, the market for quality and recognised products will be expanded, facilitating both consumers and traders in the two states,” he said.

Hajiji made these remarks at the MoU signing ceremony between ECoS and the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications (MUT) Sarawak, as well as the launch of the ECoS/SIRIM Label and the ECoS TVET Elevation Programme during the ECoS Hari Raya Open House at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Tuesday.

In this context, he reminded the public to prioritise electrical and gas safety and to pay serious attention to consumer product safety issues, especially for high-risk items.

With the influx of various imported goods into the country, including Sabah, consumers will benefit from a wider range of choices and competitive prices. However, the safety aspect of these products must be taken seriously by relevant authorities.

“As a government, we are committed and serious about ensuring the safety and well-being of the rakyat. I want responsible parties to continuously strive to strengthen consumer protection, especially regarding product safety.

“The state government supports and warmly welcomes the efforts undertaken by ECoS in collaboration with the Sarawak government concerning electrical and gas safety in both states,” he asserted.

Hajiji expressed optimism that the establishment of ECoS has ushered in a new chapter in the management of the energy sector in Sabah.

He stated that, with the regulatory powers conferred through legal provisions, ECoS must remain committed to ensuring the orderly and efficient development of the energy sector, which will support Sabah’s economic growth and benefit the rakyat directly.

Meanwhile, during the Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) Hari Raya Open House at Dewan Sipadan SICC, Hajiji witnessed the handover of a dividend payment of RM18 million from SEC to the State Government, a contribution of RM500,000 to the Sabah Welfare Foundation, and a Zakat Business payment for 2024 amounting to RM198,536 to the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS).

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III, Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya; State Finance Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun; SEC Chairman, Datuk Annuar Ayub; and SEC Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Adzmir Abd Rahman.
