Floods still inundating some areas in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The flooding that began three days ago continues to affect several areas in Sabah, as reported by infobencana at 5:04pm today (January 31).


In Kota Marudu, eight temporary evacuation centres have been established for flood victims, currently providing shelter for 2,360 individuals from 866 families.


Unfortunately, this number remains unchanged as many areas nearby are still inundated.

In Lahad Datu, three temporary evacuation centres opened yesterday are now housing 432 victims from 115 families, an increase from the 302 displaced individuals from 77 families reported yesterday.


Pitas is also experiencing an increase in evacuees, with 305 individuals from 117 families currently sheltered in three temporary centres. This is up from the two centres that were operating yesterday, which sheltered 196 individuals from 68 families.


Meanwhile, in Kota Belud, the number of evacuees has decreased. Currently, 196 victims from 63 families are being housed in three temporary evacuation centres; this is a reduction from the 233 victims from 70 families reported yesterday.


In Beluran, the three temporary evacuation centres remain stable, housing 190 victims from 55 families with no new evacuees reported as of this evening.


Telupid is seeing an increase in evacuees as well, with 281 individuals from 75 families sheltered in four centres, up from 201 victims from 48 families yesterday.


In Beaufort, one evacuation centre is currently sheltering 108 victims from 31 families, marking an increase of six individuals from two additional families.


In Paitan, six centres are operating, sheltering 239 evacuees from 87 families, while Tongod remains unchanged, with 54 victims from 13 families in one shelter.


Those affected are 4165 from 1422 families in nine districts.


Overall, these figures highlight the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by the flooding, as local authorities continue to provide support and assistance to those displaced.
