KOTA KINABALU: The Gaya Ballroom Dancers' Society marked a significant milestone with the 13th installation of its new committee during a celebratory fund-raising dinner. The event welcomed the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, who delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the society's 26 years of existence.

In her address, read by her Political Secretary Vivien Lee, Liew acknowledged the unwavering support, enthusiasm, affection, and dedication of the society's members, stating, "The fact that you have come this far reflects your commitment to the Society. Dancers may come and go, but your Society lives on." She urged the new committee to maintain their passion for ballroom dancing and wished them all the best in carrying out their programmes and activities for the 2024-2026 term.

As a non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered with the Registry of Societies Malaysia, Sabah, Liew emphasised the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations to maintain the Society's integrity. She also noted the significance of achieving the Society's objectives to ensure the well-being of all members.

Reflecting on the society's contributions, Liew praised the Gaya Ballroom Dancers' Society for its charitable work prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. "You are a caring Society indeed," she remarked, highlighting their assistance to senior citizens, disabled individuals, and schools in need. She encouraged the Society to continue its charitable endeavours while promoting ballroom dancing among enthusiasts.

Liew also spoke on the diverse motivations for taking up ballroom dancing, noting that it serves as a pastime, recreational activity, form of therapy, and healthy exercise. Beyond the physical benefits, she pointed out that ballroom dancing offers a valuable opportunity for social interaction and networking, fostering friendships within the community. She encouraged more enterprising members to participate in competitions at local, national, and even international levels for greater exposure.

The evening was a celebration not just of the Society's history but also of the ongoing commitment to fostering dance and community spirit in Sabah.
