SANDAKAN: The swift actions of senior nurse Naveneet Kaur at Sandakan Airport on November 15 serve as a poignant reminder of the life-saving importance of CPR in emergencies.
Despite her immediate intervention, the victim, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, tragically passed away on November 22.
Naveneet Kaur, a senior staff nurse with 14 years of experience at Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu, was present when the man collapsed in the airport terminal, showing signs of gasping breaths and a weak pulse.
Without hesitation, she initiated chest compressions alongside a few passengers who were also on the scene. They took turns performing CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Reflecting on the incident, Naveneet shared, “It is heartbreaking when efforts don’t lead to a positive outcome, but knowing CPR gave me the ability to try. CPR is a skill everyone should have because it could make all the difference in saving someone’s life.”
The tragic incident highlights the urgent need for public awareness about CPR and for equipping public spaces with defibrillators, which can significantly improve outcomes in similar emergencies.
Sudden cardiac arrests often occur without warning, and survival rates are heavily influenced by how quickly CPR is started. The procedure keeps oxygen-rich blood circulating to vital organs, buying time until professional medical care can take over.
While the outcome in this case was unfortunate, Naveneet’s courageous efforts underline the critical value of CPR skills in responding to such life-threatening situations.
