KUNDASANG: Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, officially launched Highland Safari 2025, held at the Open Stage in Kundasang here last night.

Organised as part of the second edition, the event saw the participation of 160 four-wheel-drive vehicles and 60 off-road motorcycles. The three-day programme, which began on 19 April, took participants along challenging routes from Kundasang Town to Bambangan, Lipasu, Mamut, and concluded at Sinar, Kundasang.

Dr. Joachim, who is also the State Assemblyman for Kundasang, said that such programmes could strengthen the local tourism sector, particularly in the Kundasang and Ranau areas.

“This event not only provides a platform for competition but also promotes the tourism destinations in Kundasang, which is already popular for events such as the Cabbage Festival and running races,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to the organising committee, led by Samsul Sinun, for their efforts in successfully executing the programme, with support from various parties including sponsors, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations.

According to him, the cool weather in Kundasang, which can drop to 9 degrees Celsius with wind and rain, makes the area a unique and attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Meanwhile, Dr. Joachim extended his congratulations to all winners of the competitions and conveyed his gratitude to the Ranau District Officer, Tinus Manggam, who also co-chaired the event at the district level.

He further acknowledged the cooperation and commitment of involved agencies such as the Health Clinic, medical teams, Sabah Parks, the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) Ranau Division, the Malaysian Volunteer Corps (RELA), and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in ensuring the programme’s success.

“If the people continue to give the government their mandate, I will continue to give my full support to the organisation of Highland Safari in the years to come,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the organiser, Samsul Sinun, also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Joachim for his support and appreciation for all parties involved, including the programme advisor, Simon Leong Ken Hiung, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, for their close collaboration.

The event was also attended by Tongod District Officer, Yuesri Ismail Yusof, a native of Kundasang, as well as presidents of four-wheel-drive associations from across Sabah.
