KOTA BELUD: The Kiau Ecotourism Cooperative Berhad (KOPEK) is transforming the landscape of ecotourism in the region, offering visitors an authentic and immersive experience of Dusun Kiau culture alongside the breathtaking natural beauty of Kiau.

Since its establishment in February 2024, KOPEK has become a beacon of sustainable tourism, preserving cultural heritage while creating economic opportunities for the local community.

The cooperative, comprising members of Kiau Nuluh and Kiau Bersatu GOMPITO (the Organisation for Preserving and Safeguarding Cultural Heritage and Nature), provides unique experiences that highlight the seamless integration of nature and culture.

Among the standout offerings is the Walai Mitapus Cultural House Homestay, where guests can savour authentic local cuisine and participate in a variety of activities showcasing the everyday life and traditions of the Dusun Kiau community.

Visitors seeking adventure can enjoy day-trip jungle treks to picturesque spots like Diba Titiu and Nunuk Camp, where the region’s diverse flora and fauna take centre stage.

For a more immersive experience, jungle camping, complete with survival skills demonstrations, offers a deeper connection to the natural environment.

Another highlight is the village tour, which takes visitors on a journey through Kiau’s rich history. This includes visits to the community production house for local goods and a mini gallery that showcases the heritage and traditions of the Dusun Kiau people.

KOPEK coordinator Paulina Gunsalam emphasised the initiative’s impact on the local community.

“These activities have created job opportunities, generated income, supported micro-businesses, and ensured the preservation of Dusun Kiau traditions,” she said.

Mini Gallery showcases cultural and historical heritage of Kiau

Looking ahead, KOPEK has ambitious plans to expand its offerings. These include enhancing the mini gallery with more historical artefacts, establishing a community centre for machete-making (supuan), and developing additional trekking trails.

Such initiatives aim to further enrich the visitor experience while promoting sustainable development for the community.
