TUARAN: Kiulu has significant potential to develop into a sports and adventure tourism hub, according to Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
He emphasised that community sports associations should take the initiative to organise events such as marathons and jungle treks.
"As the elected representative for Kiulu, I will fully support these initiatives as they have great potential for success," he stated at the launch of the Malba Athletics Club in Kampung Malangang Baru on Saturday.

Bangkuai noted that Kiulu previously hosted the 4M Challenge, an endurance sporting event that garnered popularity among adventure sport enthusiasts. Currently, Kiulu hosts the annual Borneo Ultra Marathon, attracting around 1,000 local and international participants.
"This demonstrates that Kiulu possesses all the necessary attributes to become an international-class sports and adventure hub," he added, highlighting that the sub-district is increasingly recognised as a popular community-based tourism (CoBT) destination.
As Chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board, Bangkuai was also briefed by Malba Athletics Club President Jossie Langkait and Sabah Region Sports Commissioner Sempini Langiton regarding the upcoming 1st Kiulu Open Athletics Championship 2025.
