KOTA KINABALU: The Korean Culture Festival 2024 marks an exciting milestone in the introduction of Korean culture to Sabah, according to Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
At the festival's launch on Saturday at Plaza Shell, Christina emphasised that the event serves as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at fostering closer ties between the two nations.
She stated, "This festival not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Sabah but also exemplifies the state's commitment to peaceful and harmonious coexistence among diverse communities."
She highlighted that the Korean Culture Festival acts as a catalyst for enhanced cooperation between Korea and Sabah in various sectors, including economic development, social progress, and cultural exchange.
Despite the Korean community in Sabah being relatively small—numbering around 1,000 members—she expressed confidence that it would continue to evolve into a vibrant community that actively contributes to local society and positively influences its growth.
Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Christina noted that it was made possible by the recent establishment of the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Kota Kinabalu.
"This is a unique opportunity for us to explore, connect, and learn from one another. The consulate's presence has laid the groundwork for deeper ties and increased collaboration between Korea and Sabah," she remarked.
The Minister urged attendees to immerse themselves in the festival's offerings, which showcase the rich diversity of Korean culture—ranging from music and dance to culinary delights and traditional games.
"We have a chance to witness the global impact of Korean culture and experience it firsthand right here," she added.
His Excellency Yoon Ockchae, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Kota Kinabalu, also expressed his gratitude during the event, thanking the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) and other sponsors for their support.
Notable guests at the launch included Dato' Sri Dr. Sabin Samitah, Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City, Datuk Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Dr. Huang Shifang, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Bapa Lingga Setiawan, Consul of the Consulate General of Indonesia in Kota Kinabalu, Yamashita Yoshito, Head of the Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu, and Lee Byeong Sam, President of the Korean Association Sabah Malaysia.
