Large-scale solar projects to produce 199 MW, awarded to 15 bidders

12 December 2024

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Energy Board (MTS) today approved the awarding of a large-scale solar project to 15 bidders with a total capacity of 199MW under the Large-Scale Solar (LSS) Sabah 2024 tender process managed by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said that eight of these projects (113MW) are located on the West Coast, while seven others will generate 86MW on the East Coast.

"With this number (15 projects) and existing LSS projects that are operational or under implementation, the total LSS capacity in Sabah is expected to exceed 350 Megawatts or 23% of the total power generation mix by 2027," said Hajiji during the MTS meeting at Menara Kinabalu.

He added that these projects, which prioritize state-owned and local companies in Sabah, are expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and will help reduce reliance on fuel subsidies, especially in the East Coast.

Hajiji also emphasised that the bidding price offered is competitive through encouraging participation and will set a benchmark for future energy projects to ensure best practices.

MTS also approved the Sabah Hydro Development Master Plan (SHDM) for implementation over 10 years (2028-2037).

"The SHDM study conducted by ECoS identified a potential 1,500MW hydro power capacity. With this capacity, as an addition to the 500MW that is already operational or approved, the total hydroelectric power generation capacity will be approximately 2,000MW, becoming one of the main sources of energy, reaching more than 38% of the Grid Sabah's power generation mix.

"This is one of the long-term sustainable solutions to meet our energy generation needs," said Hajiji.

Hajiji also emphasised during the meeting that it focused on addressing current energy challenges in Sabah, including capacity and grid stability issues as well as planning to meet medium- and long-term electricity demand.

Regarding off-grid electricity supply, he reiterated the State Government's commitment to achieving 100% coverage in rural areas by 2030.

"We are exploring innovative approaches to expand access to electricity for rural communities. Every Sabahan deserves stable electricity supply, and we will work with various stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private sectors to realise this effort.

"This comprehensive initiative shows the dedication of the state government to build a robust and sustainable energy infrastructure for Sabah. We not only handle current needs but plan strategically for our future generations," he said.

Also present were Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe; State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Sr Safar Untong; and ECoS CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid.
