KOTA MARUDU: The District Council (PBT) is urged to adopt a more active and proactive role in the development of the district through the effective execution of its duties and responsibilities.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Hendrus Anding, emphasised that the appointment of council members is not merely symbolic; rather, their role is vital in empowering the functions of PBT and enhancing the quality of services provided to the community.

“It is the government’s aspiration that PBT services are continually improved over time, not only in terms of efficiency and transparency but also in effectively addressing issues faced by the rakyat in an orderly, swift, and comprehensive manner,” stated the Tandek Assemblyman during the Oath-taking Ceremony and the presentation of appointment letters for Kota Marudu District Council Members for the 2025-2027 session, held here on Monday (21 April).

Hendrus highlighted that PBT must also assist in tackling illegal settlements by undocumented migrants (PTI), particularly on government reserve land and private properties, which give rise to various social and security concerns.

He stressed that close cooperation between PBT and other enforcement agencies is essential to ensure comprehensive and effective action can be taken on these matters.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of PBT playing a role in eradicating poverty through the implementation of targeted programmes and assistance, especially for rural communities.

“PBT must also strive to improve the socio-economic conditions of residents by providing support and business facilities to local entrepreneurs, including expediting the approval of business licences to enable them to operate without bureaucratic hindrance,” he said.

Hendrus added that, in terms of physical development, PBT is advised to plan and implement development projects in a more systematic, sustainable, and high-quality manner to ensure long-term benefits.

He urged every appointed council member to contribute ideas, energy, and expertise to help PBT discharge its responsibilities more effectively.

“The trust placed in you by the government is not a privilege but a significant responsibility. Ensure that every decision and action you take is always in the best interest of the people,” he stressed.

Hendrus also reminded all parties within the PBT to remain prepared to listen to public opinions and to take appropriate action for the well-being of the local community.

Present at the event were the Chairman of Kota Marudu District Council, Meirin Sugarah; the Chief Executive of Kota Marudu District Council, Abdul Sani Arsat; leaders of the Sabah Gagasan Rakyat (GRS) coalition components; and local community leaders.
