Malaysians Express Frustration Over New MyDigital ID Requirement for MyJPJ App

2 October 2024

PETALING JAYA: The recent mandate to use MyDigital ID for logging into the MyJPJ app has sparked widespread frustration among Malaysians, particularly on social media.

The new requirement, which is set to take effect on October 10, requires all MyJPJ users to install and register for MyDigital ID in order to access the app. The app, launched in late 2022, is used for managing driving licenses, road tax renewals, and, more recently, vehicle ownership certificates.

According to the Star report, many users expressed their displeasure online, with concerns ranging from the app’s usability to cybersecurity risks. A Facebook user, Wu Kwung, questioned the necessity of enforcing the requirement on all Malaysians, especially senior citizens who may struggle with technology.

“Why can't the authorities give some flexibility or make it optional for senior citizens? This age group isn't tech-savvy and can easily fall victim to scams,” he wrote.

Echoing Wu's concerns, another user, Nik San, pointed out the added difficulties the new rule could impose on older users.

"Why make things harder, especially for senior citizens? What happens if we get stopped at a roadblock and haven’t registered for MyDigital ID? Will we be penalized for not being able to log into MyJPJ?" he asked.

Others raised concerns about the safety and reliability of the MyDigital ID system. Facebook user Tantty Ali expressed her fears over potential cybersecurity risks, saying, "I don't trust that MyDigital ID is secure. We have a bad track record with technology, and our cybersecurity isn’t strong."

Adding to the frustrations, user David Cheng Kok Meng mentioned technical difficulties while trying to register for MyDigital ID, stating that the app was slow and unresponsive.

Despite these concerns, the MyJPJ app remains popular, with over 5 million downloads from the Google Play Store. However, the introduction of MyDigital ID has raised questions about how smoothly the transition will go and whether sufficient support will be provided for those struggling with the new requirement.

The MyJPJ app was initially launched as a convenient platform for managing driving and vehicle-related documents, and with the recent August update, users can now view vehicle ownership certificates through the app. However, as the October 10 deadline approaches, many Malaysians are left wondering if this new mandate will bring more complications than conveniences.
