KOTA KINABALU: The sudden transfer of former Sabah State Health Director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi has got the medical fraternity perplexed, said a local medical practitioner.

In her Facebook posting, Felicia Huang said the transfer should not take place while Malaysia is in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rundi was transferred to Putrajaya as the family development division director in the Ministry of Health (MoH) while her successor infectious disease control expert Dr Rose Nani Mudin resumes the position starting July 13.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah was among the many who set forth a farewell message for Dr Rundi and announced Dr Rose's appointment on his Facebook posting yesterday.

"Our healthcare system is on the brink of collapse but our DG (Director-General) has transferred Datuk Dr Christina Rundi, our Sabah Health Director to the Family Development Division of MoH in Putrajaya.

"No, it was not a promotional exercise and the reason for this transfer baffles many of us in the medical fraternity!" Huang stated.

"I believe that this transfer at this point in time is 'budu' (bodoh/silly), self-serving, and even vindictive," she added.

She further mentioned that Dr Rundi and her team have "effectively, tirelessly and selflessly" got Sabah out of the Covid-19 wave which emerged after the Sabah State Election last year.

"And today, for a big state with PTI (illegal immigrants) problem and many islands surrounding it, Sabah has managed to keep our number of Covid-19 cases relatively low due to Dr Rundi's effective and honest leadership," she said.

She however noted that she has nothing against the new state health director.

Huang indicated that Dr Rundi is the best person that can help Sabah steer clear of the health crisis as not only is she a public health specialist, but also holds a doctorate in epidemiology.

As of today, it is not known whether Dr Rundi has taken up the offer.
