KOTA KINABALU: Chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sabah, Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, expressed his optimism regarding the recent election of Datuk Ewon Benedick, President of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), as the new Chairman of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sabah coalition. He believes that Ewon's leadership will significantly elevate the coalition’s impact in Sabah.
Phoong highlighted his confidence in Ewon, a promising young leader, to implement essential reforms and strengthen the PH Sabah coalition, particularly as they prepare for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election next year.
“I have a strong history of collaboration with Ewon from the previous state government, and we are currently working together in ministries focused on entrepreneurship at both the state and federal levels,” he noted.
“We wholeheartedly support him. Ewon is an exceptional leader, and I have been fortunate to work alongside him for a long time now. I oversee the state-level initiatives while Ewon manages federal responsibilities,” he added.
As the Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship for Sabah, Phoong reiterated the strength of the PH coalition, which comprises the People’s Justice Party (PKR), the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), the Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Amanah—each with six representatives. This coalition aims to harness the collective efforts of its members to enhance the welfare and future of the people in Sabah.
Meanwhile, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, emphasised the importance of respecting the principles of democracy.
“Every political party goes through elections, and regardless of the outcomes, we must honour the democratic process,” he said.
He said focus should be on the future rather than dwelling on past disagreements or positioning within the party.
“It’s time for us to move on and concentrate on preparing for the upcoming state elections,” he continued.
“We have important work ahead, and engaging in internal disputes will only hinder our progress. Let us unite and channel our energies into serving the community and ensuring a successful election campaign.”
Chan who is also the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities’ statement underlined the need for cohesion and collaboration within the party as they approach a crucial electoral period. He is also the State Deputy Chairman of DAP.
