Sabah Advances Sustainable Agriculture and Blue Economy Efforts

21 October 2024

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is committed to promoting sustainable agricultural practices that support both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan yesterday.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Sabah International Blue Economy Conference, Kitingan emphasized the importance of integrating sustainable agriculture with Blue Economy principles to protect watersheds, coastal areas, and marine environments.

He cited the United Nations' definition of the Blue Economy, which emphasizes the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources for inclusive economic growth.

"A Blue Economy not only generates equitable benefits for people but also focuses on restoring and preserving healthy ocean ecosystems, building resilience, and contributing to global sustainability goals," said Kitingan.

Kitingan highlighted that the concept of a Blue Economy extends beyond marine resources, incorporating agriculture’s vital role in supporting coastal and marine ecosystems. He explained that sustainable farming techniques are critical to reducing runoff, preventing pollution, and ultimately improving the health of marine ecosystems.

"By prioritizing environmentally friendly farming techniques, we can significantly minimize negative impacts on our marine life and ensure the continued productivity of both our land and sea resources," he added.

As the state's agriculture, fisheries, and food industry minister, Kitingan emphasized that discussions during the conference laid the foundation for future initiatives. These include sustainable fisheries, renewable ocean energy, marine tourism, and innovation in agriculture, all aimed at fostering a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.

The Sabah International Blue Economy Conference has opened doors for deeper collaborations in advancing these sectors, positioning Sabah as a leader in the region’s sustainable development efforts.
