Sabah Aims to Become Renewable Energy Hub, Attract Global Investment

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Government invites global investors and industry leaders to explore the vast potential of renewable energy in the state. With a vision of establishing Sabah as a regional green energy hub, the government is dedicated to advancing clean energy projects, including solar, hydroelectric, wind, and geothermal energy.
This initiative will not only ensure sustainable energy sources but also create high-value job opportunities and stimulate the growth of green industries in Sabah.
During a recent courtesy visit from a delegation of B.Grimm Power Company from Thailand, Technical Advisor (Energy) to the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Dr. James Lim, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this initiative. The delegation, led by Khawar Khan, Head of International Business Development, was there to discuss investment opportunities in Sabah's energy sector.
Datuk Dr. James noted that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor is deeply committed to advancing this green energy agenda.
He previously stated:
“Sabah is not just investing in renewable energy, but we are building a future where clean energy is the driver and key accelerator of economic transformation. We welcome global strategic partners to work together to create jobs for Sabahans, reduce carbon emissions, and make Sabah a leading destination for green industries.”
Datuk Dr. James also explained that Sabah has a strategic advantage as a major destination for renewable energy investments in the region, with over 2,500 hours of annual sunshine, a strong river system for hydropower, and huge potential for wind and geothermal energy.
The state government intends to develop a green industrial park to attract more domestic and foreign investments.
Regarding B.Grimm Power’s interest in investing in Sabah, Datuk Dr. James stressed that the state government is ready to assist and facilitate negotiations between the company and relevant authorities and agencies.
“We welcome the commitment of B.Grimm Power, a company with extensive experience in sustainable energy in ASEAN and beyond. Their investment will not only accelerate the energy transformation in Sabah towards being more efficient and environmentally friendly, but also be a catalyst for the development of a sustainable green economy, as well as energy security of Sabah” he added.
He also stressed that this initiative will open up more high-quality investment opportunities and create thousands of job high paying opportunities in technical, engineering, and management fields for the younger generation of Sabah.
The stable and cost-effective energy security is also expected to attract multinational companies to make Sabah a major industrial and service hub in Borneo.
B.Grimm Power, part of the 147 year conglomerate, based in Thailand, is known for “doing business with compassion” as well its expertise in clean energy development in various countries including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Korea, Japan, & USA. B.Grimm Power was the first company in ASEAN to build Hydrogen ready power plants.
Their investment in Sabah is expected to involve the development of large-scale power generation, as well as research into the latest cutting edge technologies.
The Sabah State Government is confident that this collaboration will bring long-term benefits to the people and the state’s economy, thus making Sabah a leader in the energy sector in the region.
