KOTA KINABALU: In the bustling township at Puchong, Selangor, a humble stall named Mamandak Ngau Chap, has been gaining attention among food lovers.
Run by Clarye Jusimon and Sheryn Arshera Justin, a young Sabahan entrepreneur couple, the stall offers more than just delicious beef noodle soup - it tells a story of courage, tradition, and a leap of faith.
Clarye and Sheryn, originally from Ranau, Sabah, spent years working as retail associates in Selangor's fast-paced retail industry. While the jobs offered stability, as time passed, they found themselves longing for something more meaningful. They dreamt of something they could truly call their own and their mutual love for food - especially Sabah’s iconic Ngau Chap - sparked an idea.
"We've always been passionate about Ngau Chap, the flavour we grew up with in Sabah and we realized there is growing demand for authentic Ngau Chap, especially among the Sabahans in Selangor," Sheryn shares.
The couple decided to leave their stable jobs and venture into the food business. They pooled their savings, and in October 2024, they opened Mamandak Ngau Chap, named after the Kadazan-Dusun word of "mamandak," which conveys a sense of comfort, nurturing and motherly love.
The stall specializes in traditional Sabahan Ngau Chap, featuring tender beef cuts, tripe, tendon, and beef balls in a savoury, aromatic broth. "We spent months perfecting our recipe to achieve the depth of flavour that's uniquely our own," Clarye explains.
Starting their own business wasn't without challenges. From learning the ropes running food business to building a customer base, the journey was far from easy.
Since its opening, Mamandak Ngau Chap has been a favourite spot for Sabahans in Selangor looking for a taste of home and for locals eager to try something new. The couple's warm and welcoming personalities have also turned many first-time into loyal regulars.
Clarye and Sheryn's bold move from the retail industry to food entrepreneurship is an inspiring story of following one's passion.
"It's a hardwork, but seeing people enjoy our food makes it worth it, and we dream that someday we can open our own restaurant, " Sheryn says. "We took a risk, but it was the best decision we ever made".
For Sabahans who wish to savour the flavour of home, Mamandak Ngau Chap, located at DG Foodcourt, Pusat Bandar Puchong, promises an authentic taste of Sabah with every bowl, crafted with passion and tradition.
