KOTA KINABALU: A student of SMK Tulid, Keningau has contracted Covid-19 and is now receiving treatment at the district's Quarantine and Low-Risked Treatment Centre together with the school's teacher who has tested positive earlier.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said, a total of 64 close contacts have been identified and all of them are undergoing quarantine at the Institut Pendidikan Guru, Keningau.

He said, early investigation showed that the school teacher had most probably contracted the virus through community transmissions and not from the school.

"All of the close contacts have been identified, thanks to the swift action by Keningau Health Office, and they are now being isolated from the teachers and students of the school.

"Disinfection works have also been conducted at the school compound on Jan 24 (yesterday) and school sessions are allowed to run as usual with strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) compliance," he said in a press conference here, today.

According to the minister, while it is compulsory for students to undergo screening before they return to the school hostel, teachers and school staff are also advised to go for screening should they show any symptoms.

"At the same time, SOP compliance shall be given serious attention."
