KOTA KINABALU: The Tastefully Food Expo unites a vibrant community of food enthusiasts, industry professionals, and stakeholders, all gathered to celebrate the rich and diverse flavours of Malaysia and beyond.

The Tastefully Food Expo serves as an important platform that fosters collaboration, innovation, and the promotion of local products.

Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Jeffrey G. Kitingan, Deputy Chief Minister and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, And Food Industries (MAFFI), in his speech read by his Permanent Secretary Leonard Poyong, highlighted Sabah’s thriving agriculture, fisheries, and food industries sectors that are vital to the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) initiatives, the strategic blueprint for socio-economic progress in the region.

“As we gather to celebrate the rich and diverse food cultures of Malaysia, this expo also presents a unique opportunity for Sabah to strengthen its position as a key player in the agricultural and food sectors,” he said.

According to him, the State is often referred to as the "Rice Bowl of Malaysia's East,"  and is blessed with over 1.5 million hectares of agricultural land, enabling it to produce a wide array of crops.

“From paddy to oil palm and rubber, as well as our celebrated tropical fruits like durians and pineapples, these sectors are crucial in supporting SMJ’s goal of building a robust and sustainable agricultural economy.”

“Our fisheries industry is equally vital, contributing over 25% of Malaysia’s total fish production. With the SMJ Plan’s emphasis on sustainable aquaculture and fishery development, we are committed to preserving our marine resources while simultaneously supporting high-value seafood exports, including tuna, prawns, and lobsters,” he said, adding that the seafood here is not only enjoyed locally but is also in high demand internationally, particularly in markets such as Japan, Europe, and the United States.

“We are also focused on adding value to our tropical fruits through the production of juices and dried fruits, which are gaining popularity in global markets. In recent years, we have made significant strides in modernizing our agricultural and fisheries sectors."

According to him, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industries, they are incorporating smart agriculture technologies, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting innovation through research and development. These efforts align with the vision to enhance productivity, ensure food security, and create more opportunities for the people of Sabah.

He commended the organisers of the Tastefully Food Expo for providing a platform that not only celebrates food but also encourages collaboration, innovation, and growth within this dynamic industry.

He said with such collaboration the food industry can be elevated to new heights ensuring food security, economic prosperity, and a sustainable future for all.

Also present during the event were Esther Fong, Founder and Event Director of Tastefully Food Expo Malaysia, and Datuk Dr. Ramle Kasin, Director General of the Malaysian Cocoa Board.
