Students in need should be prioritised for scholarships

1 October 2024

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has expressed his support for the idea of prioritising scholarships and educational aid for students in need.

His statement comes in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion that the government might reconsider supporting wealthy students in top government-funded schools.

"We will focus on helping those who are in dire need, especially those who are less fortunate," Hajiji said during the Universiti Malaysia Sabah new students' "Akur Janji" pledge ceremony.

"We won't prioritise the wealthy and capable, but instead, we will give attention to those who are struggling."

Hajiji emphasised the importance of education in shaping the state's future leaders and improving people's quality of life.

He highlighted that the state government has always ensured that Sabahans have access to quality education from primary through to tertiary levels.

Notably, Yayasan Sabah has provided educational aid to 121,897 students since 1967, totaling RM868 million.

Additionally, the state government introduced the Subsidi Graduan Rindu Sabah initiative in March, which provides RM600 in flight subsidies to Sabah students studying in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, and Labuan.

This initiative involved a budget of more than RM10 million to alleviate the financial burden on these students.

Last year, the state government increased its allocation for scholarships to further assist students across various educational institutions.

Hajiji emphasised that human capital development is key to the state's future success, and the state government is committed to ensuring that no student is left behind.

The emphasis on supporting students in need is a welcome development, as it recognises that not all students have equal access to resources and opportunities.

By prioritising education for those who are less fortunate, the state government can help create a more equitable society and promote social mobility.
