TUARAN: Every Wednesday morning, Tamparuli town transforms into a lively hub of commerce and culture as the Tamu or traditional market springs to life.

This weekly open-air market, is not just a place of trade but a celebration of Sabah’s rich culture, traditions, and community spirit.

Vendors line the streets, showcasing fresh produces, traditional delicacies, and intricately made handicrafts. It’s where locals gather to sell their wares, catch up with friends, and savour the authentic flavours of the region.

Under a colourful canopy, Nazwa Suhimin tends to her vibrant display of flowers and herbs plants. From fragrant eucalyptus to bundles of bright lavenders and roses, and variety of herbs plants such as basil and rosemary, her stall is a feast for the eyes.

Nazwa not only brings vibrant blooms and aromatic herbs from her family farm to the market, but also takes the time to share to her customers on how to care for their plants.

“These flowers and herbs are grown in my family garden in Kundasang, and I’m proud to share part of Kundasang’s beauty with people here,” she said.

Just a few steps away, another stall fills the air with the distinctive aroma of fermented foods.

Roseliah Musi, a seasoned hawker, specialises in selling bambangan (wild mango), bosou (traditional fermented fish or meat preserves), and tuhau (a tangy wild ginger relish), each a representation of Kadazandusun culture.

“It’s not just about selling,” Roseliah shared. “The market is where we connect. I’ve been here for over three decades, and it feels like meeting family every week. After all these years, I still look forward to the laughter, the smiles, and the greetings.”

At the corner of the tamu, a small wooden table is laden with bundles of dried herbs, roots, barks, and bottles of homemade oils. Here, Dadai Padul, sells traditional plant medicines.

“Everything here is from the forest that I personally gather,” Dadai explained as he gestures to his wares.

“These plants have been used by our ancestors for their medicinal values..”

He also offers advice to customers on how to prepare and use the remedies. “It’s important to respect the plants and understand their purpose,” he added.

With its rich blend of commerce and tradition, Tamu Tamparuli continues to be a cherished cornerstone of life in Sabah, offering a unique window into the heart of its people.
