TAWAU: Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew is pleased that the Tawau Flood Mitigation Project (Packages 3 and 4), aimed at resolving the perennial flood problem in the district, is picking up steam after some delay and is ahead of schedule now.
She was told that the previous movement control order (MCO) due to the Covid-19 pandemic had slowed down the implementation of the project.
Liew said Package 3 of the Sungai Tawau Flood Mitigation Plan (or Rancangan Tebatan Banjir) being executed by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) involves downstream widening and deepening of the river-mouth, and upgrading of the Apas Bridge.
"I am glad to learn that the land issue related to the flood mitigation project is more or less settled. According to the JPS in Tawau, the progress of work is positive and stands at 29.94pc today.
“Package 3 is expected to be completed in April 2023 within the schedule, after which JPS will proceed to Package 4.
"Package 4 entails the expansion of the estuary from the Sungai Rakis outlet to the estuary of Sungai Tawau. It is scheduled to be completed in January 2024," she said in a statement on Wednesday.
Earlier, when Liew raised the issue in Parliament, she was informed by the Ministry of Environment and Water that the progress status for Package 3 was 27pc against the target of 6.5pc.
