KUALA LUMPUR: President of the United Malaysian Democratic Alliance (Muda) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has expressed gratitude to Malaysians for helping him crowdfund more than RM700,000 in just a span of 24 hours for his legal cost and RM330,000 bail.

In a Twitter posting, he revealed that the campaign managed to crowdfund a total of RM715,573.77 from almost 10,000 supporters.

"I owe my life to Malaysia. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am forever in debt.

"I will never stop until we succeed to build a Malaysia for all Malaysians. Our home," said the MP for Muar, adding that the funds to cover for his bail is more than enough.

Last night, Saddiq took to Facebook and Instagram live to address the charges that have been levied against him.

He pleaded not guilty to two alleged offences of misappropriating funds from his former political party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

In the live session, he appeals to his supporters to donate as in his crowdfunding campaign to help pay for his bail and legal fees.

Saddiq also mentioned that he was touched when one of his supporters, a middle-aged man, has come to his office to contribute to the cause.

"I thought he wanted to ask for aid, but instead he donated RM100 to me. I felt like crying.

"It is in a moment like this I am reminded why I joined politics, not for positions or money but to build a developed and dignified Malaysia," he asserted.

The 28-year-old politician also reiterated his stand to keep fighting no matter how badly he is pressed.

"No threats. No intimidation. No offers will ever weaken to put Malaysia first. I am here because of the rakyat. I fall and stand in the hands of the people. Thank you, I am indebted to all."
