KOTA BELUD: Tindian Komujo Eco-Tourism site at Kampung Tambulion, is the epitome of an eco-tourism destination. A pristine river flows along the site, framed by lush green trees. The relatively unspoiled nature offers breathtaking views and a serene environment.

According to the site's spokesperson, Kounsil Malan, 64, tourists are often drawn to the picturesque landscapes, such as the jungle, the river, and the field dotted by bamboo. These scenes provide opportunities for photography, relaxation, and immersion in nature.

“Some people come here to have some peace and quiet, immersing in the tranquillity of the site. The invigorating air, away from urban pollution, can promote physical and mental well-being, so they come here for ‘healing’. The fresh air is refreshing and rejuvenating, contributing to a sense of relaxation and escape.”

“Visitors are drawn to the river for various activities, whether it's swimming or observing the tame gentle fish. There are three designated areas along the river: one is deep, ideal for experienced swimmers; another is moderately shallow; and the shallowest area is perfect for children and non-swimmers,” he said.

Several charming shelters have been constructed around the field, primarily made of wood and designed with an emphasis on aesthetic appeal. These quaint structures blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

In addition to the shelters, there is a small hall that serves as a communal gathering space. This hall is particularly useful during inclement weather, providing a refuge where guests can congregate or even pitch tents if heavy rain makes the ground outside soggy.

There are barbecue pits one can use to roast fish, among others.

For those wishing to extend their stay, there are five modest houses available as sleeping quarters. While these accommodations are basic, they offer a comfortable place to rest. Guests should note that bathing facilities are limited; visitors typically use the lavatory or the nearby river for washing.

Many prefer the river, not only for its abundance of water but also for the enjoyable experience it offers. Overall, the site provides a rustic yet inviting environment for relaxation and connection with nature.

Kounsil shared that there is currently no electricity or treated water supply available in their area. They rely on solar power generated from three panels that were generously donated to them by a non-governmental organization (NGO). At present, their water supply is sourced from the river. He emphasised that with improved utilities, they would be able to enhance their facilities significantly.

Additionally, Kounsil highlighted the need for the road leading to the eco-tourism site to be sealed or asphalted, as it becomes quite muddy during the rainy season. The narrowness of the road also prevents buses from accessing the site from the sealed road.

He also mentioned that plans are underway to construct more shelters in the area. Their cooperative currently has 31 members who actively participate in building shelters and maintaining the surroundings through communal efforts known as Gotong-Royong.

Looking ahead to the Visit Malaysia Year 2025 (VMY2025), Kounsil expressed hope that this initiative will bring benefits to their eco-tourism site.

He stated, "We will do our best to present our eco-tourism site to tourists. Most of our visitors are domestic, and we have yet to welcome international tourists."

He noted that their typical guests include families gathering for reunions and church groups that come for retreats, gatherings, and baptisms.

Kounsil recounted the beginnings of their eco-tourism venture, which started in 2017 when he and a group of friends came together to clear the land, previously overgrown with trees and bushes. He acknowledged the support of the Kadamaian State Assemblyman, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who launched their tourism site and donated building materials.

Kounsil expressed gratitude for Datuk Ewon's ongoing support, especially now that he serves as the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDC), positioning him to further assist them as tourism entrepreneurs.
