PENAMPANG: Mohd Adam Ashari is the proud proprietor of Kuruma Trading, a tyre company located in Donggonggon, Penampang. He took over the business from an acquaintance a few years ago, and since then, he has expanded its offerings significantly.

“Nowadays, we provide a range of additional services,” he explains, highlighting that the company now conducts engine repairs, suspension work, and various other automotive services that cater to the needs of their customers.

As the eldest of two children, Mohd Adam's journey into the automotive sector is somewhat unconventional. Despite not having a formal education in mechanics, his passion for the industry motivated him to turn his interest into a thriving business.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management from UNITAR, which he successfully applies to the operations of his company, ensuring that both the business and its employees are well managed.

Looking back, Mohd Adam recalls his earlier days: “I worked in a supermarket, handling administration tasks, back in 2013. However, I wasn’t satisfied with that line of work. I had a connection with the owner of the tyre shop, and one day he mentioned that he was looking to sell the business. I thought, ‘Why don’t I take over?’ The asking price was RM40,000 in 2016, which I believed was a very reasonable deal, and it felt like the right opportunity to pursue my passion.”

Thankfully, the previous staff chose to stay on, facilitating an easy transition into his new role. “We just went ahead and got on with it,” he recalls with a sense of pride.

In late 2020, amid the challenging economic environment wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mohd Adam recognised the need for financial support to sustain his business. He turned to TEKUN National, that has an entrepreneurial assistance programme, for help.

“A friend introduced me to them, and I applied because I found the terms and conditions quite favourable,” he explains. His first loan of RM20,000 in the late 2020 was applied to cover the ongoing expenses of the business during those uncertain times.

This year, 2025, he successfully secured an additional loan of RM50,000.

“This funding is aimed at improvements and covering running costs,” he explains, underscoring his commitment to using the funds wisely. “Of course, we will ensure that that the money be allocated towards enhancing services and purchasing new machinery.”

Mohd Adam’s dedication to excellent customer service and efficient business operations is evident in his efforts to establish Kuruma Trading as a respected name within the automotive industry.

With a clear vision and a strategic approach, he continues to pave the way for his company’s growth, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of its customers while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.

As for TEKUN, he said, "I cannot overstate how instrumental TEKUN has been in my journey as an entrepreneur. Their commitment to supporting local businesses is remarkable. They offer not just financial aid but also guidance and encouragement, which can make all the difference for someone just starting out or looking to expand. With the right support, I was able to identify areas for improvement and invest in the necessary upgrades for my business, ensuring we thrive even in challenging circumstances.”

To any aspiring entrepreneurs out there seeking to start their own businesses or expand existing ones, he advised, “Don’t hesitate to seek help. Look for resources like TEKUN that offer financial support tailored to your needs. They are dedicated to nurturing entrepreneurial spirit, and their programmes can facilitate that crucial first step or significant leap forward.

“Additionally, ensure you conduct thorough research before diving into your business. Understand your market, identify your target audience, and plan carefully. Create a solid business plan that outlines your goals, strategies, and potential challenges. But most importantly, follow your passion. Your drive and enthusiasm will be your greatest assets as you navigate the path of entrepreneurship.”

“Remember, building a successful business is not a solo journey; it requires collaboration, resilience, and a willingness to learn. Don't be afraid to ask for advice and lean on those more experienced than you. With dedication, the right support, and a clear vision, you can turn your entrepreneurial dreams into reality."
