KOTA KINABALU: The Orientation Programme for new students (February 2025 intake) at the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) took place over two days, at its campus in Sembulan, recently.

More than 100 individuals participated in the programme, which is mandatory for all students registering at UCSF.

Among the activities included in this programme were routine sessions featuring briefings from several departments, including the Registrar's Department, Finance Office, Waqf and Endowment Unit, Student Affairs Department, and the Academic Faculty.

According to the Acting Head of the Student Affairs Department at UCSF, Mazlinah Binamin, the orientation programme was entirely organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC) for the 2024/25 session, led by its President, Dayangku Lailatul Norsa'adah, with support from student facilitators.

She noted that other activities included a motivational talk by UCSF Counsellor, Suhaifah Irna, as well as a session on Sexual Crime Awareness Among Higher Education Students, presented by Inspector Florence Ansikit from the D11 Women and Children’s Sexual Investigation Unit of the Sabah Police Contingent Criminal Investigation Department.

Binamin highlighted that the two-day programme also featured various games, sports, and recreational activities designed to assist students in transitioning to university life and to foster positive relationships between current students and newcomers.

The programme concluded with a pledge reading by the new students, the presentation of awards, and a photo session during the closing ceremony, which was officiated by UCSF Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Dr. Rafiq Idris.

UCSF Acting Registrar, Norasyiqin Ahmad, stated that the Registrar's Office is prepared to assist new students with all academic and administrative matters, ensuring a smooth and enriching academic journey at UCSF.

Meanwhile, Datuk Dr. Rafiq, in his address, reminded new students that, in addition to learning from lectures and university activities, they are encouraged to independently enhance their "soft skills" and acquire additional competencies to improve their competitiveness in the job market.

He also emphasised the importance of mastering and communicating in various languages, in addition to Malay, English, and their mother tongues, such as Mandarin, Korean, Arabic, and others.

Also present at the closing ceremony of the Orientation Programme were Deans of Faculties, Deputy Deans, Heads of Departments, and UCSF staff.
