KOTA KINABALU: University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Bulungan Tarakan from North Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Delegates from STIE visited UCSF’s main campus in Kota Kinabalu for the signing ceremony, underscoring both institutions' commitment to fostering collaboration.

This MoU aims to enhance student exchange programs, promote visiting scholar initiatives, facilitate research collaborations, and establish various forms of academic partnerships.

Attended by notable figures such as Datuk Asnimar, a member of the Board of Governors, the event marked a significant step towards strengthening ties between universities in Sabah and Kalimantan. Both regions are integral parts of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

The signing ceremony attracted over 100 attendees.

Following the MoU signing, UCSF and STIE Bulungan Tarakan co-organised an international seminar titled “The Relocation of Indonesia’s Capital City: Potential Impact, Issues, and Way Forward.”

Dr. Marso, a representative from STIE, expressed hopes that the collaboration between the two higher education institutions will provide valuable insights for stakeholders and policymakers, contributing to the broader vision of ASEAN and the specific goals of BIMP-EAGA and SOSEKMALINDO.

Furthermore, the collaboration is focused on leveraging the potential of the Heart of Borneo area as an ecotourism destination, with a view to developing a "single tourism destination" as outlined in the strategic programs of the BIMP-EAGA document.

UCSF Vice Chancellor Datuk Dr. Rafiq Idris highlighted the university's eagerness to strengthen academic partnerships with institutions in Kalimantan, particularly with STIE, one of the key higher education institutions in North Kalimantan.

He emphasised that North Kalimantan is a neighboring region to Tawau and shares a common border with East Kalimantan, where Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara, is situated.
