UMS aspires to be world leader in global research on the Blue Economy and Maritime Security
2 November 2024
KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today marked a significant step in its mission to drive world-class research in the blue economy and maritime security by launching its new Blue Economy and Maritime Security Research Centre, which includes both an office and a living laboratory.
The centre aims to conduct pioneering research with benefits for both local communities and the state.
UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Md Mansor, highlighted the centre's potential to support policy development, underscoring the importance of the blue economy and maritime security as areas for sustainable growth.
"This centre will enrich educational resources and expand the body of knowledge available to future generations," said Dr. Kasim.
"Protecting and responsibly managing our maritime resources is essential for Sabah’s development. We possess not only terrestrial but also underwater resources, many of which are still untapped."
Dr. Kasim emphasized that the research initiatives align closely with the state’s Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda, which prioritizes sustainable economic advancement. He also noted that UMS, with its expertise in marine and maritime studies, is well-positioned to take on this leadership role.
After the inauguration at the Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC) at UMS's Pantai campus, Dr. Kasim elaborated on UMS's commitment to harnessing Sabah's abundant marine resources.
"Sabah's vast blue ocean offers immense opportunities, and with proper development, it can be a major economic asset for the state," he stated.
Sabah’s waters, located between the South China Sea, the Sulu Sea, and the Celebes Sea, face numerous security challenges due to their strategic position, explained Kasim.
These challenges include smuggling, kidnapping, and foreign vessel intrusions, all of which pose significant risks to maritime security in the region.
Kasim shared that Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is nearing completion on a critical study related to the sovereignty of islands within Sabah's maritime territory, including Pulau Layang-Layang.
In addition to security, UMS is focused on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
Kasim highlighted that extensive research is underway on high-value marine species, such as hybrid fish, as well as on initiatives to restore diminishing coral reefs in the area.
"Through our research, we aim to revive coastal ecosystems, which will, in turn, help restore coral reefs,” he said.
Kasim also noted that UMS hosts a broad array of marine life studies. The university’s Borneo Marine Research Institute serves as a leading incubator for marine research and conservation efforts, showcasing numerous projects. This commitment to marine science has earned UMS recognition as a centre of excellence.
