KOTA KINABALU: Water supply disruption have affected several residential units and blocks at the main campus of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

In a statement released by UMS  Corporate Communication, this interruption is due to the low water level being supplied Tank R13, managed by the Sabah State Water Department (JANS), which is currently at just 1 on a scale of 10.

The excessive water usage and incidents of water theft in nearby areas have been identified by JANS as contributing factors to the reduced water supply reaching Tank R13.

It is important to note that Tank R13 not only supplies water to UMS, but also to several external buildings and areas, including the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (DUN Sabah), the Sabah State Administration Office (PPNS), the Federal Office of Putrajaya Sabah Branch, Alam Mesra, the Likas Women and Children's Hospital, and surrounding residential neighbourhoods.

The university is taking proactive and comprehensive measures to ensure that the welfare and basic needs of students are maintained throughout this disruption. Since 2:00 AM today (April 13) water pressure from JANS to Tank R13 has begun to recover, with 3 million litres of water successfully pumped into the tank.

As of this statement, the water supply across the campus has improved following the enforcement of measures to cut off illegal pipe connections in nearby informal settlements.

The Department of Development and Maintenance (JPP) UMS will continue to coordinate water supply based on current levels and will utilise alternative sources such as tubewells.

In light of this, the University Management urges all campus residents to remain vigilant and stay informed about updates, and to report any related issues to the university.

UMS is also working closely with JANS and relevant agencies to expedite efforts to restore the water supply fully.

The university greatly values the patience and cooperation of all students and campus residents during this situation.

Students are advised to use water judiciously, maintain personal hygiene, and to keep up-to-date with official announcements provided via the UMS mobile app, the university’s official social media channels, and their respective college communication channels.

For further inquiries or requests for assistance, students may contact the Residential College Office at 088-320060.
